D is for Damp

Wednesday, June 6, 2012:

Drips and drops and drizzle.  Dreary and drab.  Dude!  How much more of this can a hiker take!  Hiker shoes are beginning to evolve whole new species of mold and fungus.

The morning started rain-free.  It was a sucker morning, though.  By 9AM it was raining for the gazillionth day in a row, and it lasted for a couple of hours.

Then we witnessed a strange phenomenon in the afternoon  - the clouds parted and there was some sort of brilliant ball of light in the sky.  Legend speaks of such an orb.  What was it called?  Can't remember ... it doesn't begin with 'D'.  Of course it went away again and there was another shower late in the afternoon to assure that the vegetation would drip and drop tomorrow morning and soak the shoes once more.

Damn!!

Still, while that Disc of light was shining, it made for some wonderful viewing.  It lit up the face of Nancy, this week's caretaker at Upper Goose Pond Cabin.  She's from Maine, lives right near the trail.  She loves to hear hikers' stories - a great listener.  And a great source of information about hiking the AT in Maine.  I look forward to tapping into more of her knowledge as I approach Mahoosuc Notch.  We might even hike it together.

And Goose Pond itself Dazzled under the Disc.  Here's the hiker swimming area.  And after a brisk morning dip, Nancy cooks you pancakes for breakfast.  Even though it's a half mile side trip from the trail, this cabin is a place the thru-hiker must not miss!

D is for Deep - Knee Deep to be exact.  Beavers have taken up residence in Knee Deep pond, just a hop and a skip north of Webster Road.  They've probably made it thigh-deep.  I wasn't about to check.  And the beavers haven't stopped the frogs from vociferously declaring the name of the pond, over and over and over again:   "nnnnneee-deep, nnnnneee-deep, nnnnneee-deep."
