Segment 32: South Carolina

OVERVIEW:

The South Carolina segment of the Fifty Trail traces an arc from the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina down the Bartram Trail (which returns to Georgia), and the Foothills Trail, which straddles the North/South Carolina border.

The Foothills Trail is coincident, in places, with South Carolina’s state trail, the Palmetto Trail, which continues southeastward to the Atlantic coast.

The route begins near Wayah Bald in North Carolina where the Bartram Trail intersects with the Appalachian Trail. The Fifty Trail follows the Bartram Trail southeastward for 44 miles to the Georgia state line and then 37 miles to its eastern terminus at the Russell Bridge over the Chatooga River.

A short road walk to Oconee State Park connects to the Foothills Trail, and the Fifty Trail follows that to Sassafras Mountain on the North Carolina-South Carolina border.
