Segment 16: Minnesota

OVERVIEW:

The Fifty Trail coincides with the North Country Trail for its entire 857 mile traverse of Minnesota. Leaving North Dakota the route begins with a stretch of road walk then passes through White Earth State Forest, Itasca State Park, and Chippewa National Forest on substantial lengths of back country trail. Next there’s a considerable stretch following the multi-use Mesabi Trail before the trail enters the very remote Border Region and follows the 41-mile Kekebek Trail and then the 65-mile Border Route Trail. Finally the route reaches the vicinity of Lake Superior at Minnesota’s ‘arrowhead’ and follows the 310-mile Superior Hiking Trail southwestward to Duluth and crosses into Wisconsin.
